Patient Story: Lily the Brave
General

Say hello to our sweet friend Lily! Lily presented to our ER department on 4.28.25. Lily had multiple abdominal exploratory surgeries, but she continued to be ill with ongoing vomiting and drainage from her incision site. Despite continued emergent care, Lily continued to decline, and she was referred to VSB.
Dr. Hoff of VSB’s emergency service evaluated Lily and found her to be in critical condition. She was immediately transferred to VSB’s surgery department, where Dr. Vaughn performed emergent surgery due to septic peritonitis.
Dr. Vaughn then performed a resection and anastomosis. This surgical procedure is done to remove the damaged portion of the intestine to then join the healthy ends back together.
Lily did well with surgery but had a long road to recovery ahead of her. Lily spent the next 10 days with us, being cared for by numerous doctors and our amazing ICU team.
Her care consisted of the following:
placement and maintenance of a central line and Jackson-Pratt drain
maintenance of a nasogastric tube
pain management
IV fluid therapy
specialized nutrition
antibiotics
We’re very happy to report Lily is doing great and has made a full recovery thanks to the ongoing care she receives from her loving family.
